Garden Office and Gym in Swords

7m x 4m Project

This 7m x 4m garden room in Swords, Co. Dublin is one of our largest recent builds, combining a home office and a garden gym in one purpose-built space.

One Garden Room, Two Uses

A garden gym paired with an office is one of the most popular combinations we’re asked for. At 7m x 4m, this build gives the client a full home gym on one side and a quiet, dedicated workspace on the other. No more gym membership, no more commute, and both spaces are just seconds from the house.

There’s a practical money side to it too. Between a family gym membership and the time lost travelling to and from work, a dual-purpose garden room starts paying for itself from day one. And unlike a gym membership, it adds real value to your home.

Built for Heavy Use

A garden gym needs more than a standard shed can offer. This garden room is fully insulated in the floor, walls and roof, with a reinforced floor to handle weights, racks and cardio equipment, and double-glazed windows and doors for light and ventilation. It’s a comfortable training space in January just as much as July.

On the office side, the room is wired with sockets, lighting and network points, so it works as a full-time workspace rather than a corner with a laptop. Good insulation matters double in a room like this: it keeps the gym usable year-round and keeps the office warm without running heaters all day.

Does a Garden Gym Need Planning Permission?

In most cases, no. Garden rooms under 25 square metres are generally exempt from planning permission in Ireland, subject to garden space and height conditions. At 28 square metres this Swords build was a larger project, so we guided the client through the planning process from the start. It’s something we handle regularly, and we’ll tell you exactly what applies to your garden at the survey stage.

How Long Does a Build Like This Take?

A garden room of this size is typically completed on site within two to three weeks of the design being agreed. All the work happens in the garden, so there’s no disruption inside the house while the build is under way.
